Ireland weather: Country set for cold snap as Met Eireann predicts 'unsettled' conditions this week

The country is bracing itself for a week of winter weather, with Met Eireann predicting a cold snap this week amid "unsettled" conditions across Ireland.

The national forecaster is projecting a spell of colder weather as the next week continues – while things are set to get "very windy" in parts of the country today.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow weather warning is in place across Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry today, with heavy rain predicted and even some travel disruption and flooding.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said the weather will be "mild at first, but turning cold from midweek", and warned off a risk of frost as the week wears on.

Monday will bring mild temperatures and outbreaks of rain and drizzle, with minimum temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

This will continue for most of Tuesday, with a few bright spells in the east while most of the country sees further rainfall.

From Wednesday, though, temperatures will take a sharp and noticeable dip, with minimum overnight temperatures of between 2 and 5 degrees.

And Thursday could see frost in some parts of the country, prompting concerns that we could be in for a spell of very cold weather in the coming weeks.

Met Eireann's Thursday prediction is for a "cold, bright day, with sunny spells and scattered showers, but cloud and more persistent rain will extend from the Atlantic later, mainly affecting the west and southwest."

The frost risk is most likely to bear out in the north, the forecaster has warned.

Meanwhile, a famous Donegal postman has shared an update on his festive prediction – and it seems we could be in for a white Christmas.

Michael Gallagher is known for making his long-term weather forecasts by observing the behaviour of plants and animals.

He has already given his white Christmas prediction, telling RSVP Live: "We are in for a very, very cold winter.

"And I know there will be snow, and it will be close to Christmas Day. It will be there or thereabouts."
