Ireland's newest pub opens with pints as cheap as €3 and buzz of excitement locally

Ireland’s newest pub opened in Waterford City this afternoon after being granted its license early this morning to sell pints as cheap as €3.

This marks the eighth JD Wetherspoons to open nationwide and is located on Arundel Square.

The pub was due to open back in December, but after a number of delays related to the pandemic, locals are only now able to enjoy the addition to the town.

Around €3.8 million has been invested in the property which will create 80 full and part-time jobs.

It’s bound to be a hit with pub-goers as it famously sells drinks far below the average in other joints across Ireland.

According to the Wetherspoons app, a pint of Carlsberg is as cheap as €3.25, while Foster's is even less at €3.05 a pint, Stella is €3.95, and Moretti €4.10.

Ciders range from €3.45 to €3.55 and spirits start at €3.35.

A spokesperson for JD Wetherspoons Eddie Gershon said The Arundel Gate will have its renowned low-priced food and drink offering.

He said: "All our pubs have a similar food and drink menu, although that may vary slightly, they all look different. Some are former churches or theatres for example.

"In Waterford, the building was a former bank and lady's clothes shop, and we take great pride in having a lot of historical aspects to the building's past," he said.

The Arundel Gate is spread across two storeys, with two enclosed courtyard terraced gardens, and an open kitchen.

The interior also features historical photos artwork and images of local scenes as well as local characters displayed on the walls.
