Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim Al-Jubouri said his country was looking forward to opening a new page of relations with its Arab surroundings.

Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim received his Iraqi counterpart on Sunday in Kuwait to discuss regional challenges and latest developments.

Talks have also touched on bilateral relations and major political and security developments in Iraq and the region, as well as Arab and international efforts to support the stability in the liberated areas, and work on reconstruction and the return of displaced families.

“The Emir of Kuwait reiterated his country’s firm stance in supporting Iraq and standing by its side in fighting terrorism,” said a statement issued by the office of the Iraqi speaker.

“We look forward to starting a new chapter with our Arab surroundings, and to the brotherly countries to play a role in rehabilitating our cities affected by terrorism and removing all obstacles to the return of the displaced to their liberated areas,” the statement added.

In February, Kuwait hosted an international conference for the reconstruction of Iraq with the participation of a number of donor countries and international and regional organizations, headed by five parties - the European Union, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Nations and the World Bank - which ended with a total commitment of $30 billion.

The Kuwaiti Emir pledged to support Iraq with two billion dollars, one billion in form of loans, and the other is earmarked for investment.

Regarding the reconstruction file, the Kuwaiti Speaker stressed the importance of Arab and international support in the reconstruction of the liberated Iraqi cities.

During his meeting with Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Jubouri said: “The challenges facing the region call for more serious understandings and dialogue to find radical solutions to crises away from the language of escalation.”

The Kuwaiti premier, for his part, paid tribute to the victories achieved by Iraq against terrorism, and the country’s relentless efforts to restore stability.

He also stressed Kuwait’s keenness to “provide all aspects of assistance and support to the Government of Iraq and its people.”
