The Iraqi army arrested five ISIS militants in Baghdad and Anbar governorates as security forces continue to pursue terrorists throughout the country.
Military spokesman Major General Yahya Rasool said the counter-terrorism unit carried out security operations and arrested two terrorists in Abu Ghraib - Karma, and three others in Heet district in Anbar.
Meanwhile, the Joint Operations Command announced that one of its units thwarted the infiltration of ISIS terrorists from Syria into Iraq at al-Dukji border area, west of Mount Sinjar in the northern Nineveh region.
Security forces also engaged in clashes with another terrorist group in Mount Sinjar within Iraqi territories. One member of the border guards was killed, while the group fled to Syria.
Controlling the border with Syria is one of the greatest challenges facing Iraqi forces given the long border between them. The parliamentary security and defense committee announced a major project to install security cameras along the border.
Committee member Gatah Al-Rekabi said the security forces aim to install a wide network of advanced cameras on the border with Syria, which could help reduce the number of border control units and infiltrations.
He stressed that protecting the Iraqi border is a security priority, give that terrorist groups operate in those areas.
Al-Hol camp near the Iraqi border is a major security challenge for Baghdad, because it houses a large number of terrorists, according to Rekabi.
Separately, the Iraqi parliament is preparing to debrief security leaders on the breaches in the security in the Salaheddine province in wake of the terrorist attack in the Al-bu Dor village where eight civilians were killed in an attack claimed by ISIS.
Member of the parliamentary security and defense committee Saaran Al-Ajibi announced that heads of security agencies, such as the intelligence, national security and Defense Ministry intelligence, will be summoned to discuss the general security situation and prevent future breaches.
It is time to hold a meeting at the highest levels in order to update the security plans and redeploy military forces, said another member committee, Saad Maye.
He described the incident in Al-bu Dor as a “heinous crime” that brought back to mind the terrorist attacks committed against innocent people.
The lawmaker warned that the recurrence of various security breaches reveals there is a serious weakness that needs to be addressed immediately.
He called for holding a meeting at the committee’s headquarters. It should be attended by commander of the armed forces and security leaders and will be aimed at accurately pinpointing the shortcomings and updating security plans.
