Who is Bita Hemmati?
Bita Hemmati is a Tehran-based resident who has been accused of involvement in protest-related incidents that took place in January 2026. According to reports cited by Fox News, she is among four individuals sentenced to death by a Tehran court in connection with these events.
Her case has drawn particular attention due to the severity of the sentence and her alleged role alongside others reportedly connected to the same incident.
Family and co-accused individuals
Hemmati’s husband, Mohammadreza Majid-Asl, has also been sentenced to death in the same case. Two additional individuals, Behrouz Zamaninejad and Kourosh Zamaninejad, were also given capital punishment. Reports indicate that the two men lived in the same residential building as the couple.
Another individual, Amir Hemmati, who is believed to be related to the couple, has reportedly been sentenced to five years in prison.
A source quoted by HRANA, as cited in Fox News reporting, described the connections between those involved, stating that the couple lived together in Tehran and that Amir Hemmati is a relative. It was also noted that the Zamaninejad individuals were arrested simultaneously while residing in the same building.
Allegations and charges
Authorities have accused Hemmati and the others of serious national security offenses. These allegations include claims that during incidents on January 8 and 9, the group engaged in violent actions such as:
Using explosives and weapons
Throwing objects, including concrete blocks and incendiary materials, from rooftops
Injuring security personnel
Spreading anti-government propaganda
Acting in coordination with what authorities described as a “hostile government of the United States”
The court has also ordered the seizure of the defendants’ personal assets as part of the ruling.
Concerns raised by human rights groups
Human rights organizations have expressed serious concerns about the fairness of the proceedings. They allege that some of the confessions presented in court may have been obtained under pressure, with reports of possible torture during interrogations.
Activists have also questioned the strength of the evidence linking the accused to the alleged offenses. Many argue that such harsh penalties may be intended to deter future protests and suppress dissent.
What happens next?
At present, no execution date has been announced. Human rights groups are continuing to call for a halt to the sentences and are urging a full and fair review of the case.
As legal and international scrutiny continues, Bita Hemmati’s case remains under close watch, with further developments expected in the coming weeks.
