Iran earthquake: Strong 5.1 magnitude tremor strikes close to nuclear power plant

An earthquake has struck near a nuclear plant in Iran with fears it could have caused "considerable damage."

The magnitude 5.1 quake has hit near the Bushehr plant today the US Geological Survey has said.

Tt is centred 33 miles east of Bushehr, on the southern coast but Iranian media said there were no immediate reports of damage.

"No reports have been received on any possible damage from the earthquake," state television said.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was recorded at 1:53 GMT and located at the depth of 38.3km.

"No damage has been reported to us so far based on the checks by the Red Crescent Society, village councilors and officials in the area," Jahangir Dehqan, the head of the provincial emergency department, told the semi-official news agency ISNA.

In November the construction of a second nuclear reactor began at the plant, reports Aljazeer.

The facility is said to be being fuelled by uranium enriched further than the boundaries set out by a nuclear deal agreed with world powers in 2015.

A third reactor is planned and, along with the one currently being built, will bolster Iran's power grid by more than 1,000 megawatts.

Russia is helping with the project, and had been heavily involved in getting the first reactor live in 2011 after major delays.
