IPL 2022, MI vs KKR: Kolkata Knight Riders stay alive after 52-run win against Mumbai Indians

Bumrah's 5/10 in vain as batsmen flop

MUMBAI: Jasprit Bumrah bowled one of the finest spells you would have ever seen in the IPL at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday night, but it wasn't enough to lift Mumbai Indians from the mediocrity that they have slipped into in IPL 2022.

After Bumrah's devastating 5/10 in four overs of high-class pace bowling restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 165 for nine in 20 overs, the two-time champions came roaring back into the contest, as Pat Cummins (3/22), Andre Russell (2/22) and Tim Southee (1/10) returned fire with fire to ensure a 52-run win which keeps their team alive in the race for the playoffs.

In Pics, IPL 2022 Match 56: Kolkata overcome Bumrah magic to keep play-off hopes alive

Badly missing Suryakumar Yadav, who's out of the rest of the IPL due to a left forearm muscle injury, MI, done and dusted, crashed to 113 all out in just 17.3 overs, losing their last eight wickets for 44 runs in merely 42 balls.

Fielding like tigers, KKR pulled off three run outs as MI suffered their ninth loss in an embarrassing season.

Bowling like a raging tornado, Bumrah, after taking just five wickets in 10 matches in IPL 15, tore into the Knight Riders to record his best-ever figures in T20 cricket, even as his effort went in vain.

Breathing fire, the 28-year-old used the short ball to deadly effect to blow away KKR taking two wickets in his third over, then delivering a triple wicket maiden 18th over (he took three wickets in four balls and narrowly missed out on a hat-trick), and then a one-run 20th over to completely dismantle the second half of the KKR innings. How much he dominated the batsmen reflects in the fact that he bowled as many as 18 dot balls.

Bumrah's sensational, devastating spell meant that KKR, who looked set for a big total after coasting to 87 for one in the first 10 overs, collapsed astonishingly in the second half of their innings, losing eight wickets for 78 runs in the last 10.
