IOC grants 'provisional' recognition to World Boxing as international federation

NEW DELHI: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday granted provisional recognition to World Boxing as the governing body for the sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

This decision comes after the IOC severed ties with the International Boxing Association (IBA), the long-standing authority for amateur boxing, due to concerns over financial management, governance, and ethics.

As a result, the IOC took charge of boxing’s organisation for the Paris 2024 Olympics and has now recognised World Boxing as the sport’s new oversight body moving forward.

The International Boxing Association (IBA), previously the sport’s governing body, is chaired by Kremlin-linked Russian Umar Kremlev.

In response to governance concerns, World Boxing was established in 2023 and now comprises 78 member nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, and Brazil.

IOC President Thomas Bach had earlier stressed the need for boxing’s national federations to align with a "reliable" international partner to secure the sport’s place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

In its statement recognizing World Boxing as the new amateur boxing federation, the IOC praised the organization’s commitment to good governance and compliance with appropriate standards.
