Investigation launched as 23-year-old man dies after ordering food from Shieldfield takeaway Dadyal

A man has died after ordering a meal from a Newcastle takeaway.

Northumbria Police confirmed that it has launched an investigation after a 23-year-old died at a house in Jesmond last Friday, July 10, having earlier had food from the Dadyal restaurant in Shieldfield.

While the exact cause of the young man’s death is yet to be established, police did confirm that he had food from the Indian takeaway and died afterwards.

An investigation is now under way, with officers working alongside Newcastle City Council’s food safety team to determine what happened, though enquiries are understood to be at a very early stage.

At present, no action has been taken against the restaurant in Howard Street.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a 23-year-old male has died after falling ill at an address in Jesmond. Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

A council spokesperson added: “We are aware that a 23-year-old man has died. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

“Our Food Safety Team has been informed and is supporting Northumbria Police with its investigation.”

Gulfam Ulhaq, the restaurant’s owner, said staff were “in shock” after being told by police that one of their customers had died.

He added: “I was really shocked when police told me he had passed away and that he was only 23 years old. It is very, very sad. We are all in shock.”

Mr Ulhaq confirmed that the takeaway order in question was placed online via Deliveroo and said that the website contained “very clear” information regarding allergens and food hygiene.

Dadyal has since been removed from Deliveroo and Just Eat’s websites, though the takeaway is still open.

Dadyal has a food hygiene rating of three, or ‘generally satisfactory’, according to the latest report from the Food Standards Agency following an inspection in March 2019.
