Investigation launched after 'several' horses found in poor health in Hetton-le-Hole

An investigation is under way after several horses were found to be in poor health.

Northumbria Police was contacted by the RSPCA requesting assistance near allotments on Richard Street, Hetton-le-Hole.

Witness says they saw police and RSPCA vehicles in the area.

It is believed that a large number of horses were found in poor health at the site and were rescued by the RSPCA.

An investigation has been launched to find out if any criminal offences have been committed.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 2pm Thursday October, 15 we were contacted by the RSPCA who requested assistance at a site in Hetton-le-Hole.

“A number of horses were found to be in poor health and were subsequently seized by RSPCA officers. We will continue to support their investigation and ascertain whether any criminal offences have been committed.”

A spokesperson for RSPCA said: "Together with Northumbria Police, RSPCA rescuers have removed a number of horses from a location in Sunderland following welfare concerns.

"As our enquiries are ongoing, we’re unable to give any more details at this time.”
