Investigation launched after Leeds off licence is caught with illegal tobacco

An investigation is underway after an off licence in Morley was allegedly caught selling illegal tobacco.

Leeds City Council states that "illicit cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco" were found at Fountain Food And Wine, in Fountain Street, during searches and test purchases carried out last year.

West Yorkshire Trading Standard Service and senior council licensing officer Carmel Brennand are now calling for the store's premise licence to be revoked.

Ms Brennand has stated that current licence holder Mr Ali Mahmood "has failed to operate responsibly in upholding the licensing objectives" following "repeated test purchases and seizures of illicit tobacco at these premises".

The store's alleged dealings in illegal tobacco are also the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.

The council's licensing sub committee will decide whether to suspend or revoke the premise licence when it meets on Tuesday, January 7.

At the meeting, Mr Mahmood will also be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
