When you’re Sophie Turner, a simple wave doesn’t just say ‘hello’ — it can allegedly detonate a celebrity engagement. The Game of Thrones alum casually revealed on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week that she may have caused a celeb couple to end their engagement — all because of a wave. Yep, a wave.
The 29-year-old actress told Seth Meyers about a Comic-Con afterparty back in 2014 where her childhood mate begged her to wave at an actor she had a crush on. Sophie, being the good mate she is, gave him the world’s most innocent “hiya” from across the room.
Harmless, right? Not exactly.
Moments later, Turner said she was approached by “a famous actress” who hit her with: “Can you stop fucking flirting with my fiancé?”
Sophie claimed she was baffled, because she literally had no clue who the guy even was. Still, according to her, the A-list couple called things off that very night. SCANDALOUS.
Of course, she didn’t name names — she joked she’d “get in trouble” if she did. But the internet, being the internet, immediately started sleuthing. Over on Reddit, users put two and two together and landed on one theory: that the mystery couple was Emma Roberts and Evan Peters.
“The streets are saying it’s Emma Roberts and Evan Peters, which tracks,” wrote one user.
To be fair, the math is in fact mathing. Roberts and Peters were famously on-again-off-again throughout the 2010s, first getting engaged in late 2013.
In July 2013, Roberts was even arrested for an alleged domestic violence incident involving Peters, which didn’t stop them from reuniting and putting a ring on it that Christmas.
By mid-2014 — yep, the same time as this supposed Comic-Con chaos — they were still together, partying at the 20th Century Fox bash in San Diego.
Things did seem dicey that weekend. Photos published by the Daily Mail showed Roberts in tears outside the Omni Hotel in the early hours after the Comic-Con parties, being comforted by friends.
Less than a year later, outlets like the New York Daily News reported that she and Peters had quietly called off their engagement.
So does that mean Sophie’s wave really set off the meltdown? Hard to say. It’s worth pointing out that Roberts and Peters’ relationship had a long track record of turbulence and multiple breakups before they ended things for good in 2019.
Sophie, in contrast, seems to have just stumbled into the drama by accidental politeness. Oops.
Still, fans are divided. Some argued online that Sophie wouldn’t exactly describe Roberts as someone who “meant a lot” to her. Others countered that, for a British teen in the 2000s, Emma Roberts flicks like Wild Child, Aquamarine and Nancy Drew were Friday-night sleepover staples — so it kinda makes sense.
Whether or not the Reddit detectives are right, one thing’s clear: Sophie Turner basically waved her hands and shattered a Hollywood engagement. The power she holds clearly has no bounds!
