International Women's Day 2023: Events happening in Newcastle and the North East

A variety of events have been planned across the region to mark International Women's Day.

Taking place on Wednesday, March 8 the day is an annual global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

It also marks a call to action for further accelerating women’s equality.

The day of celebration is the centre point of Women’s History Month, which takes place over the course of March.

Organisations across the North East are holding events celebrating the achievements of women and bringing awareness to crucial causes.

International Women’s Day has been marked for more than a century and each year’s event is given a theme.

Here we have round up some of the events happening in the region.

International Women's Day: Gan on Hinnies by Pat Stevens

Date: March 8

Time: 2.30pm

Location: North Shields Customer First Centre, Northumberland Square, North Shields, NE30 1QU

Join Pat Stevens fascinating talk about Suffragettes in our region.

After retiring as a teacher, Pat pursued her interest in local history and is a Newcastle/Gateshead City Guide.

Gan on Hinnies is her book all about the women active in the fight for the vote

This Girl Can

Date: March 8

Time: 5.30pm - 8pm

Location: Exhibition Park

This Girl Can will take place on International Women's Day. It is a sporting event where those taking part can run, jog or walk a 5km or 1 mile route.

COCO celebrates International Women's Day #EmbraceEquity

Date: March 8

Time: 6pm

Location: Florence Kirkby Lecture Theatre, The Frederick Douglass Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne

There will be a diverse range of speakers who will share their personal experience of inequity (and inequality) be it personal, educational or professional.

The women behind the stones

Date: March 8

Time: 11am - noon

Location: Newcastle Cathedral

Learn about some of the trailblazing women remembered in the Cathedral.

Meet the Madonna in our medieval window; 16-times mother, Elizabeth Maddison; stained-glass artist Caroline Townshend and other notable women highlighted on this tour.

Bollywood themed International Women's Day celebrations

Date: March 8

Time: 6pm

Location: The Customs House, Mill Dam, South Shields

Dress to impress, food, entertainment, henna and lots more.

IWD Green Day

Date: March 8

Time: 10.30am

Location: Women's Workshop, Coquet Enterprise Park, Amble NE65 0PE

We are celebrating International Women's Day 2023 with a three-day programme of events, workshops and discussions.

The Women's Workshop Green Day is the final event, featuring opportunities to garden, work with willow and make your own bird box.

You can also reserve your copy of our new poster, a 'Sow and Grow' calendar of the gardening year.

Tyne to Stand Up...Again!

Date: March 8

Time: 7.30pm

Location: Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Westgate Road, Newcastle

A gala of the great women comedians in the North East is to take place at the iconic Tyne Theatre and Opera House to mark International Women’s Day.

The show takes place in aid of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland with all money going to the charity.

An awesome line-up has been assembled, with the show shining a light on women and the incredible talent we have in the region.

International Women's Day at Beamish Museum

Date: March 11/12

Time: 10am - 4pm

Location: Beamish Museum, County Durham, DH9 ORG

Learn about the role of women in the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s and 1950s as we celebrate International Women’s Day.

Take part in activities across the museum and discover how the role of women changed over the years.

Park Run

Date: March 11

Time: 8.50am

Location: Jesmond Dene

As many women and girls as possible are being encouraged to participate in Jesmond Dene International Women’s Day parkrun. We celebrate all our park runners and park walkers and invite you to wear purple for the occasion.

The event is a 5km course. Please come along to run, jog or walk and join in - whatever your pace. Please register before your first parkrun and don’t forget to bring your barcode with you. New runners briefing is at 8.50am.
