We might live in a global world but each nation has its own set of manners.
The rules around etiquette vary around the world and what is regarded as polite behaviour in one country may be seen as highly offensive in another.
Learning about the significance of behaviours, gestures and customs is particularly important for those who do business abroad. Addressing someone in the correct way can be crucial for making a good first impression. In Japan, for example, looking someone directly in the eye for too long can be a faux pas, says Nick Rines, chief executive officer, of the Institute of Diplomacy and Business.
“Japan is a society in which social protocol is ingrained very deeply. Based on good manners and hierarchy with deference to age, etiquette is more important in Japan than almost any other nation.”
