Interior expert warns against painting error that can 'ruin look of your home'

When it comes to painting your home, choosing the right colour scheme can feel like an impossible task - especially when there are so many shades to pick from.

One interior design expert has said there's a common mistake that people often make when they paint their home, as they often don't think about the way the light in their room will impact the colours.

Loren Kreiss explained in a viral video that it's important to test out the colours you like before you commit to fully painting your room, and recommended trying one shade lighter and one shade darker than the colour you've chosen.

In a video shared to his @kreissdesign account on TikTok, he said: "One of the most common and costly mistakes people make is not testing a colour in their space prior to painting. Your lighting can make a beige look yellow, a grey look green, or a white look too sterile.

"Make sure to test at least three colours on an important wall prior to painting. Use your original colour, a shade lighter, and a shade darker. Look at them in the daylight and at night, as this will ensure you pick the right colour."

Loren is based in Los Angeles and is the CEO and creative director of Kreiss, an interior design company that specialises in luxury home furnishings.

In another video, the man said that despite dark grey being hugely popular among interior designers in recent years, he would never use it himself - as he believes it looks uninviting and "cold".

He said: "Here's one key thing to avoid if you want your home to look luxurious and inviting. Grey.

"Lose the grey. It's cold and dreary. And don't sleep on a good beige, it never went out of style and it's coming back big time. Don't be afraid to use a little texture like a lime wash too, that'll take everything over the top."

Commenters on the video were quick to praise the designer for his advice, with many saying they wished they had followed his tips when they were painting their homes.

One person said: "Thank you, great advice!"

While another added: "Facts. I got a light beige and it looks dark grey in my bathroom for some reason."

And a third wrote: "I bought a bucket of the most expensive paint for my house. After it was set and done it looked like a doctor's office. Was too sterile. Listen to him!"
