Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Lautaro Martinez has taken another fresh turn after reports emerged that Inter Milan are willing to offer the Argentine a more influential role in their side.
Spurs, who started the season with a huge win over Premier League champions Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon, are interested in signing the 23-year-old.
football.london reported in early August that Tottenham had agreed a fee with Inter for his services, believed to be in excess of €60million euros (£51million).
However, that agreement was in place before the Nerazzurri decided to sell Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea for £97.5million, making the deal with Martinez that little bit more complicated, with the Italians reluctant to let go of another one of their star strikers in such a short space of time – even with their ongoing financial struggles.
And now, it appears as though a potential deal has been made even more difficult, following recent reports from Italy.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via sempreinter, Martinez will take up an increasingly central role and bigger responsibilities at the San Siro, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
As the club’s top scorer last season Lukaku’s exit, has left an undeniable void in Inter’s squad, and as he was also known as a vocal leader, the Belgian needs to be replaced in that respect, too.
Inter are working on a contract extension offer for Martinez, and they hope to tie down an agreement as soon as possible.
That new deal could give him an important leadership role in Milan, which will inevitably dampen Tottenham’s chances of signing him in the future.
