Insulate Britain blocks four major routes into London as protests enter fourth week

Climate change protesters from Insulate Britain have blocked four major routes into London.

The group said 50 people were holding up traffic this morning at the Blackwall Tunnel, Hanger Lane, Arnos Grove and Wandsworth Bridge.

It is the latest in a string of protests from Insulate Britain, which has previously targeted the M25, M4 and Port of Dover.

Some drivers were seen clashing with demonstrators, including a woman who said she was desperate to see her mother in hospital.

Video captured by LBC at the Blackwall Tunnel shows her remonstrating with protestors amid blaring horns from dozens of other angry motorists.

She told them: "She's in the ambulance, she's going to the hospital in Canterbury, do you think I'm stupid?

"I need to go to the hospital, please let me pass. This isn't OK ... How can you be so selfish?"

Protesters wearing high-vis jackets appeared to be speaking quietly with the woman but showed no sign of letting her through.

Insulate Britain, an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, is calling on the government to fully fund the insulation of all social housing by 2025 and the low-energy, low-carbon retrofit of homes by 2030.

Posting on Twitter yesterday, transport secretary Grant Shapps said: "Recent weeks have demonstrated that the police need stronger powers to tackle those who illegally block motorways.

"Conservatives will introduce new laws to lock perpetrators up for 6 months, and face unlimited fines.

"We will not stand by while motorists are held hostage."

A spokesperson for Insulate Britain said: "We’re more scared of what will happen when the climate crisis causes the breakdown of law and order, than we are of injunctions and prison.

"The government is focussing on us rather than what’s coming down the road. They need to face up to reality."
