Instructors complete epic 24-hour yogathon to raise cash for Movember

While many of us struggle to fit in just an hour at the gym two West Lothian businesswomen completed the epic challenge of 24 hours of yoga!

Over the past three years, Ruth Hollis and Sonja Anderson of Sonshine Hollistic have raised funds for Movember, a charity supporting men’s health in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

They have also been encouraging more men to take the plunge and join a yoga class.

This year they decided to truly challenge themselves with their gruelling challenge of completing 24 hours of yoga and have raised over £2000 and counting.

The girls explained: “We chose Movember because men are generally under-represented in yoga classes.

“This has improved over recent years as yoga has appeared on timetables in gyms.

"However to encourage men to feel comfortable, Ruth runs a class for men weekly which is really popular.

“In previous years, proceeds from a men’s class went to Movember but this year, we wanted to do something bigger and better.

“We completed the challenge from 8am on Friday, November 18 to 8am the next day and had a blast doing it.

“There were different types of classes, some were challenging and others were relaxing, some were aimed at adults and others at kids.

“We have a team of teachers who very kindly donated their time during the day.

“Overnight Ruth led a night shift team, comprised of her husband and two clients, Louise and Alistair Hutson.

“Overall nine teachers and over 60 clients were all doing yoga at some point during the 24 hours.

“Those wishing to support us could either sponsor us to keep going, or come along to join a class and give a donation. We were so delighted that so many of our community came out and supported us.

“So far we have raised a mighty £2100 and we could not be more proud!”

Ruth and Sonja are both former primary school teachers based in Livingston and have spent the past few years building their own yoga businesses.

After a number of successful collaborations, including creating a programme for schools called Lotus Learn Yoga, they decided to combine forces to create an exciting and varied selection of yoga classes.

In June 2022, they moved into their brand new studio space in Barden House beside Murieston Medical practice.
