Instant analysis of Broncos’ selection of TE Noah Fant in NFL draft

With the No. 20 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos selected Noah Fant, an athletic tight end out of Iowa. This pick was made after the Broncos traded the No. 10 overall pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fant should fill a need for the Broncos that has existed for many years. Jeff Heuerman and Jake Butt are on the roster, but Butt hasn’t been able to stay healthy and Heuerman is not a tight end who can stretch the field.

Fant can do that. He is a matchup nightmare and should give Joe Flacco, a quarterback who loves to the throw to his tight ends, a dynamic option in the passing game.

Over the last two seasons, Fant caught 69 passes for 1,013 yards and really had a nose for the end zone, finding pay dirt 18 times. His 19 career touchdowns are the most for a tight end in school history at Iowa.

It’s hard to sell the idea of a tight end being drafted in the first round, but the Broncos now have their move tight end that has the speed and athleticism to make plays in the open field.

Take a look at these highlights. You’ll like a lot of what you see:

The Broncos had needs at other positions when the No. 20 overall pick came up, but John Elway and staff felt that it was finally time to find a tight end that can stretch the field.
