Inside new Greggs where everything is discounted and can get four jam donuts for 55p

Greggs is a firm favourite takeaway for so many people thanks to their affordable and tasty treats, but the eagle-eyed amongst us will have noticed that the prices are a little more expensive than they used to be.

Fear not though, as a Greggs Outlet store has opened in Manchester, and some people are claiming that it's the "best thing" to ever happen to the city.

Thirty outlet stores have already opened their doors around the country, leaving Greggs fans excited, and the new branch on Henshaw Street, opposite Oldham's Tommyfield Market, is the first to arrive in Greater Manchester.

But it looks totally different to the Greggs stores you usually visit, and adore.

The Manchester Evening News visited, and noted: "The first thing you notice as you walk into the store is that there is no hot food counter, which usually catches the eye of every hungry customer who comes through the door. Instead, favourites like sausage rolls and steak bakes are bagged up in multiples and displayed on shelves around the store, alongside sweet treats like doughnuts and Belgian buns."

The red signs around the shop boasting discounts also remind customers that this isn't your usual Greggs store.

The items for sale at Greggs Outlets have all been saved from becoming food waste and can be purchased at a discount price.

The Manchester Evening News said the price differences are "staggering", sharing that in Spindles Shopping Centre branch of Greggs, a pack of four sausage rolls will set you back £3.60.

But in the Outlet, both meat and vegan sausage rolls are available in packs of four, costing just £1.55 - a saving of 57%.

Similarly, they noted that packs of two 'bakes' - chicken, steak, vegetable, cheese and onion, or sausage, bean and cheese melt - cost £1.25.

In the regular Greggs, a single 'bake' from the hot counter costs either £1.80 or £1.90 depending on the filling, so a saving of up to 67% is available in the Outlet.

They continued: "Then there are the sweet treats. In the Outlet this morning, you could pick up a box of two yum-yums or glazed doughnuts for 55p, while a pack of four jam doughnuts also cost 55p, and a box of four filled doughnuts were available for £1.45.

"At the regular store, two yum-yums or glazed doughnuts will set you back £1.30, a pack of four jam doughnuts is £2.55 and a single filled doughnut is £1.20. The saving on the jam doughnuts is the store's biggest bargain, at a phenomenal 78% price cut."

But when the Mirror went to the Greggs Outlet at the small estate shopping row on Cundy Road in Newham, Danni Scott was less than impressed with the amount on offer.

She said: "The offerings for lunch were sparse at best", sharing the sandwich options were " tuna rolls, ham and cheese baguettes or egg sandwiches", as she didn't fancy a cold bake.

A spokesperson for Greggs told The Mirror: "It very much depends on what's left over from the day before. So they do work a little bit differently to a normal shop but that is the caveat of having day old food being sold through the outlet shops."

They added: "These Outlet shops are helping to support those most in need, it enables those with a tight budget to be able to spend less while still being able to buy food."
