Ben Foster ignored his plan and trusted his instincts when saving a potentially promotion-sealing penalty. The 40-year-old kept out Cedwyn Scott's spot kick in the dying seconds of last weekend's National League showdown with Notts County. The victory moved the Welsh side three points above the Magpies with a game in hand.
It means Wrexham are in pole position to secure a return to the Football League, needing seven points from their final four games. Foster, who signed for the club on a short-term deal last month, has explained his thought process.
Foster, speaking on his Foz Cast podcast, said: "What I agree with the goalie coach before the games is when they get a penalty, I will look at you. He has got the cheat sheet in front of him and he will hold up his right for my right, left hand for my left and arm down the middle for he's going to go down the middle. I didn't even look at him!

"Sometimes as a goalie you have to go with your instincts, read the situation and go with your instincts a little bit. I thought he would either put it down the middle or to my right and I was hoping he wouldn't go down the middle because no goalie wants to just stand in the middle.
"The Go Pro was in that right corner and I don't know what it is but I just wondered whether he might want to put it on the Go Pro and hit it that side. It might just have been something to aim at. I don't like having anything in my goal really, a towel or a bottle or anything like that, because I think it can be something to aim at, especially from a penalty. So everything added up for me to go to my right.
"I just pushed off with everything I've got to my right-hand side and as I am diving and I am thinking 'he's going that way, oh my gosh' And then you just pray he doesn't put it high because if he puts it high he will score. It was a really good penalty, he slapped it, a good pace and it is in the corner. It wasn't a bad penalty.
"As soon as I swatted it away and saw it bounce out and for a corner, I don't celebrate saves, I never have, but I have never saved a penalty in the 96th minute before! I couldn't help but give a little punch in the air."
