Injured train passenger again requests compensation

BURI RAM - A 21-year-old mother made a third request for compensation from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) on Thursday, for serious injuries sustained in a fall from a train late last year.

Nisachol Nopakhun arrived at Buri Ram train station in company with her community leaders to file her third compensation demand with the station chief. Two previous requests brought no response.

Ms Nisachol, accompanied by her husband and child, boarded Bangkok-bound train number 146 in Krasang district of this northeastern province, heading for Ayutthaya province, on Dec 26 2016.

When the train was passing through tambon Isan in Muang district of Buri Ram, Ms Nisachol got up from her seat intending to walk to a toilet in the adjoining carriage. As she passed across the connecting aisle, it shook violently. She fell off the train and was seriously injured.

She sustained a long gash on her head, broken collarbones and ribs, and severe bruising. She was treated for two months at Buri Ram Hospital and at home. She was still unable to return to work because of severe headaches.

Ms Nisachol said her husband was a construction worker and his income alone was insufficient for a family with a four-year-old child.

Accompanying her was a lawyer, Withaya Saiduang, kamnan of tambon Pasan.

Mr Withaya said Ms Nisachol had submitted two previous demands for compensation to the SRT. If the third request also went unheeded they would consider filing a lawsuit.

Buri Ram station master Banjong Janthon said he had forwarded her letters to SRT headquarters and the SRT forwarded the matter to its insurance company.

He quoted Ms Nisachol as saying an insurance company representative had earlier phoned her, and since then she had heard nothing.
