Influencer branded 'vile' for sharing jaw-dropping 'staged' photo amid protests

If you've been on social media in the last few days, it's likely you'll have seen the hashtag, #BlackLivesMatter.

Following the tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota on May 25, people all around the world have been sharing support and protesting.

And while it's heartwarming to see so many people coming together in solidarity and attempting activism, we've also unfortunately been able to see a rather dark side of the internet.

Many people are keen to make a difference and help in any way that they are able, but others seem to be treating it a little more like a bandwagon to jump on, or an Instagram trend to follow.

This was highlighted earlier today when a video of a young woman went viral on Twitter.

The video, uploaded by a user called @ewufortheloss, appears to show a woman staging a photo with a man who is boarding up the front of a shop in Santa Monica.

The woman is shown borrowing the man's drill for the picture and posing with it.

Once the image was captured, she hands the drill back then thanks the man, explaining that the snap was for her Instagram.

She goes on to praise her "boyfriend of Instagram" for taking the picture before getting into a black Mercedes Benz and yelling: "Good job, you guys! BLM!"

Alongside the video, @ewufortheloss tweeted: "This lady stopped someone boarding up a store in Santa Monica so she could hold the drill for a picture, then drove away. Please don’t do this."

They added: "The problem here is that she’s 1) using this terrible situation to promote herself instead of the man who’s actually helping and 2) completely insensitive to racial/class tensions.

"Influencers: use your platform for ACTUAL good, not the PERCEPTION of good."

The clip has now been viewed over 11 million times and garnered over 61,000 likes and 36,000 retweets.

Many were appalled by the footage, branding it "vile" and "grotesque".

One person commented: "The things people do for Instagram likes are disgusting."

Another replied: "Gawd that’s gross."

A third said that it had made their "jaw drop".

Someone else added: "I legit had to watch twice. Thought it was a spoof."

Even singer Pink had some thoughts on the video, sharing it and saying: "What is wrong with these entitled a**holes?! Who the f*** are you and who are your parents you horrible person. How can anyone defend this???!!!"

Director Ava DuVernay also tweeted the video, writing: "You know what? I’m… I think I’m gonna put Twitter away for a few minutes before I throw this phone across the room."
