Infiniti Uses Real Gold To Paint The 2027 QX65

THE BREAKDOWN

  • The 2027 Infiniti QX65 debuts a new color called Sunfire Red.
  • Infiniti uses real gold-coated glass flecks in the paint, and each car requires two gallons of paint.
  • Sunfire Red resembles Regal Red, which was offered on the 2015 Nissan GT-R.

Infiniti recently debuted its latest coupe-like two-row crossover, the 2027 QX65. The shapely machine debuts wearing a unique paint color dubbed Sunfire Red. Take a closer look at the color, because if you find it a bit dazzling, that's owed to the actual gold used in the paint.

Sunfire Red features gold-coated glass flecks. The gold bonds to microscopic glass flakes, allowing it to spread evenly throughout the paintwork.

Painting Process and Gold Security Measures

Applying Sunfire Red requires a three-stage painting process. There's a red base coat. The middle layer is a transparent coat comprised of the gold-coated flecks, and then there's the clear coat to protect it all.

Infiniti says each QX65 requires two gallons of paint. And the actual manufacturing process requires extra layers of security and inventory monitoring. The paint supplier uses armored trucks to transport the gold used in the paint.

A Familiar Hue For Nissan Fans

Sunfire Red certainly looks great on the car, but if you're a Nissan brand fan, it might also seem a bit familiar. That's because the 2015 Nissan GT-R debuted a color called Regal Red. Nissan also used gold in the paint for that hue.

Motor1's Take: Sunfire Red looks excellent. But I'm curious how much extra cost is involved in creating such a color. Especially at a time when the entire Nissan/Infiniti family is reportedly looking at ways to cut costs.

Regardless, seeing any color offered on modern cars is great, as too many lineups are filled with boring black, white, and gray options.
