Inefficient Celtics can’t close deal against Griz, falling 94-88

After going undefeated in the first four games of the Las Vegas Summer League circuit, the Boston Celtics were eliminated in the first game of the Summer League Tournament with a 94-88 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Though Celtics rookie point guard Carsen Edwards would once again lead Boston in scoring, this time tallying a game-high 25 points in 24 minutes, the Grizzlies defense held Boston to 36.7 percent shooting from the field and 28.9 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Celtics allowed three of Memphis’ starters to score in double-figures.

Edwards would only shoot 9-23 (39.1 percent) from the field but go 6-14 (42.9 percent) from three, making a number of tough shots that left Memphis’ bench looking exasperated.

The second-round pick out of Purdue scored with an effortless grace, playing with veteran savvy and lending credence to the belief that he’s already ready for a spot in the Celtics’ rotation.

Aside from shooting guard Javonte Green, who scored 17 points on 5-10 shooting from the field; point guard Tremont Waters, who recorded 16 points and two steals; and center Robert Williams, who pulled down 12 rebounds and turned away two shots, the rest of the team put up underwhelming performances.
