A surge in Covid cases in Spain could see mandatory mask wearing reintroduced indoors at tourist hotspots such as Malaga, Catalonia and the Canary Islands.

Spainish Health Minister Carolina Daria has said people should consider wearing masks indoors as cases increase.

The advice comes just months after mandatory indoor mask use was scrapped, aside from on public transport.

Health authorities in the Canary Islands are echoing calls for indoor mask use.

Canary Islands government representative Amós García Rojas, reportedly said he couldn’t rule out demanding mask indoors again “to protect the vulnerable”, the Mirror reports.

Meanwhile the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, called for masks to be worn indoors again after testing positive for Covid.

His call could see masks being introduced at the Costa Del Sol.

He said on Twitter: “It is necessary to return to masks indoors and always open windows. Let’s not relax.

“If we do not stop the acceleration of infections in recent days, we are going to have a summer with many health problems that will affect the well-being and lives of many.”

Meanwhile, masks are still mandatory in certain indoor settings in Catalonia.

Catalonia health authorities are advising people to wear them indoors if people are at risk, or have symptoms of respiratory illness.

Masks are still mandatory there in health centres, nursing homes, public transport and pharmacies.

Brits travelling to Spain for summer holidays will need to provide a Covid vaccination certificate, a negative certificate of an active infection, or a recovery certificate.
