Independence Day 2 'missed out' by not bringing Will Smith back and it wasn't 'good'

Sequels are usually better when the characters from the first movie make an appearance, and it seems Vivica A. Fox thinks so too.

In an interview with AV Club last Friday, the actress reflected on Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster hit. "I just didn't feel like it was good and it lived up to the first one," she said.

"I really feel we missed out by not bringing Will Smith back," said Vivica.

Will Smith's character, US Marine Captain Steven Hiller, was the star of the first Independence Day film. The film's writers, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, wanted the character to return for the sequel, but couldn't afford Smith's $50million asking salary. That year, Smith went on to star in Suicide Squad, claiming he wanted to try something new.

Box office wise, the original film did much better, grossing $817.4 million. The sequel fell short as it only made $389.7 million twenty years later.

Vivica A. Fox, played Dr. Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller, the wife of Smith's character. Fox and other original cast members such as Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Brent Spiner were featured in both movies.

"We had most of the original cast on, but I think the one true like that was missing to the success of Independence Day 2 was that Will Smith wasn't there," said Vivica.

The sequel introduced a new cast of characters, such as Liam Hemsworth who played Jake Morrison, the new male lead. Maika Monroe and Jessie T. Usher played new characters as well.

Independence Day was Will Smith's first blockbuster hit movie, only previously starring in Six Degrees of Separation and Bad Boys in 1993 and 1995 respectively.

In her interview with AV Club, Vivica also talked about starring in SZA's Kill Bill music video. The video is an homage to the Quentin Tarantino series Kill Bill that Vivica also starred in alongside Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu. Fox appears as SZA's driver as the singer takes revenge on her boyfriend.

Currently, Fox is hosting The Interrogation Room, a true crime series that focuses on the interrogation between detectives and murderers, taking a look into real-life detective work.
