Incredible picture captures 'red lightning' during early hours of the morning

A dramatic picture taken in the early hours of the morning shows a unique sight of lightning against a red sky.

The perfectly timed photo was taken by Nottinghamshire Live reader, Jules Mower, at around 2am on Wednesday, August 12.

Jules, who took the photo in Tibshelf, said: "It seemed as though it was a mixture of sheet and bolt lightning for about an hour or more.

"The sky was incredible.

"It was almost as though there was a constant low rumbling of thunder, not loud cracks as you normally imagine it to be."

There has also been some footage captured in Chilwell from Tuesday night, where small flashes of red lightning can be seen.

However, unlike a typical storm, no thunder could be heard along with the bolts of electricity.

Temperatures reached a sizzling 31C and stayed above 20C well into the night.

Nottinghamshire Live has contacted The Met Office for more information on the phenomenon.
