Incredible Northern Lights photo captured in Glasgow postcode

It's not often we get to see the Northern Lights this far south in Scotland - some people take a trip to Iceland for the privilege alone, but it turns out there's no need to travel when it can be witnessed right on your doorstep.

If you happened to be in a particular Glasgow postcode in the early hours of this morning (Thursday 4 November), you may have gotten lucky and seen the incredible spectacle for yourself, such as one of our Glasgow Live readers Kenny MacFarlane.

Not only was he greeted by the magnificent Aurora Borealis on the banks of Loch Lomond, but the keen photographer also managed to land some stunning snaps of the rare sight and was kind enough to share them with Glasgow Live today.

Kenny explained to him how a late-night alert led him on a dash to the loch to capture the moment on camera.

He told Glasgow Live: "At 10.30 last night, I'm in Glasgow and I get a major Aurora alert.

The second of two amazing photos taken at Loch Lomond (KENNY MACFARLANE)

"I'd been watching sun activity on the space weather app on and off most of the day and had seen Coronal Mass Ejections heading to earth at around 750 kilometres per second, very high.

"I also knew there was a very good chance of clear skies, so I belted up to Loch Lomond Shores Retail Park, and got there about 11.35.

"For the next hour, the Aurora was quite faint, then at 1am, it did this. It was the first time I had actually seen it this strong with the naked eye - mind blowing stuff.

"I came home about 3am a very happy boy!".

Although Kenny told Glasgow Live he almost missed one of shots after being confronted by an energetic puppy at the Shores.

He said: "The second picture is more recognisable as being at Loch Lomond Shores retail park.

"We were freezing. A young Alsatian dog jumped on me while I was taking pictures, which made me bump the camera and ruin one of my pictures.

"It is shot on a Nikon D850 body with a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8E lens. ISO 800, 8 seconds at aperture F2.8."

Thanks very much to Kenny for sharing the two beautiful photos with us.
