Incredible Edinburgh video gives snapshot of city life in the 1990s

An amazing BBC video has surfaced on the internet and gives us a fantastic snapshot of what Edinburgh looked like in the 90s.

Anyone from the 1980s or 1990s will probably remember the BBC Children’s education series “Watch!”

The long running show started all the way back in 1967 and only ended in 2009, with more than 540 episodes produced.

Now, one of their episodes has been uploaded to YouTube for people to watch again and gives us a fantastic glimpse of what Edinburgh looked like all the way back in the early 90s.

The 15-minute short show follows a tour of children as they explore the Scottish capital on a treasure hunt.

It gives us a great look at iconic parts of the city, including Waverly Station. As well as seeing many of the old trains used at the time, we can also see the station with the analogue departures and arrivals board, before the new digital one was installed.

Despite the old trains and metal seats, much of the station is surprisingly recognisable nearly 30 years later.

Next, the show takes us to the New Town and Princes Street. Which is noticeably lacking many of the features that people think of on Princes Street, in particular the recently opened St James Quarter is absent from the Edinburgh skyline as is- of course- any of the trams or tramlines.

It also gives us a great glimpse into many of the souvenir and tartan shops across the street. It also shows us some rather vintage fashion and shoes from the 90. For example, a pair of Nike’s Air Magnum Force shoes from 30 years ago, which were on sale for £54, which would be equivalent to nearly £120 today when adjusting for inflation.

Finally, the show takes us up The Royal Mile and onto Edinburgh Castle. We see the City Chambers and while they might not have changed much, it’s fascinating to see all the old cars parked in front of the building.

And, of course, the castle remains much the same as it is now but it gives us the chance to see fantastic views of the 1990s Edinburgh Skyline. We can even see some construction work and torn down buildings along Princes Street- making way for some more modern builds.
