Inconsolable Argentina coach Scaloni quits press conference in tears after Spain defeat

An emotional Lionel Scaloni left his post-match news conference in tears following his team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.

The South American former champions, led by Lionel Messi, were hoping to become the first team since 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups. Scaloni was also bidding to become only the second manager in history to retain the trophy following their 2022 win in Qatar.

However, Ferran Torres' extra-time strike ended the Argentinians’ dreams.

Scaloni, whose contract expires in December, tearfully said: “It hurts my soul, I’m so sorry”, before he left the room.
