Inchicore community devastated as St Michael's centre closes forever after decades ahead of demolition

The much loved St Michael's community and health centre in Inchicore is shutting its doors for the last time today.

The site is being acquired by Dublin City Council for use as part of a future development site for the former St Michael's Estate.

It is part of a land swap deal that will see the ownership transfer from the HSE to the council in exchange for a former council depot site at Gulistan Terrace in Rathmines which will be made into a primary care centre.

The HSE is also set to pay the council €2 million as part of the deal which values the Emmet Road site at €3.5 million and the Rathmines site at €5.5 million.

A notice has gone up on the Emmet Road centre's gates from the city council that says the building is set to be demolished along with the remains of a halting site.

There are currently no plans to have construction on the site in the near future but works to manage the site in the meantime will be taking place.

The Inchicore community reminisced on social media on great times spent in the club, including the Sgt Pepper's disco in the 1970s and the establishment of the youth club on the site.

They also gave a special thanks to Deirdre Coffey and the staff that worked in the centre over the years.

From committees to coffee mornings, pantos to sale of works, it's been the heart of the community in Inchicore for many decades.
