In Plain Sight: Martin Compston drama about serial killer Peter Manuel back on TV tonight

A drama following the story of the detective who finally brought down Scotland's worst serial killer is to get another airing tonight.

The series, In Plain Sight, stars Martin Compston as evil Peter Manuel, and Douglas Henshall as detective William Muncie who eventually brought him to justice.

The three-part mini-series was first broadcast on STV in 2016 and was filmed in locations across Glasgow, including the former Victoria Infirmary.

The show, written by Nick Stevens, follows Muncie’s first arrest of Manuel, in 1946, for housebreaking and his subsequent conviction for a string of sexual assaults aged 16, which saw him sentenced to nine years in prison.

When Manuel was released from jail in 1955, he went on a two-year killing spree, claiming the lives of eight people in South Lanarkshire – though it is believed he killed many more.

The killer taunted Muncie throughout, leaving him birthday cards and clues until he was finally captured.

Manuel, who came to be known as the Beast of Birkenshaw, was convicted of seven murders at his trial and was hanged at Barlinnie prison in July 1958.

The drama will air tonight on STV at 9pm. The second and third part will be broadcasted on Tuesday, June 8 and Wednesday, June 9. It has also been made available on STV Player.
