In photos: Fire breaks out in high-rise block of flats

Residents were evacuated from a block of flats today (September 8) after a fire erupted in a kitchen.

Firefighters attended the blaze at Carolina House on Dove Street this afternoon, where they extinguished flames on the 12th floor.

The flat occupier, a man in his 50s, exited the building on his own and no-one was hurt, but a fire chief warned people to take care when cooking.

As it happened - Fire service called to flat fire at Carolina House in Dove Street

Station manager Matt Osborne said: "I would like to remind members of the public that when they are cooking they should pay due care and attention to what they're doing and not to leave the kitchen and make sure you're monitoring it because if you're absent for any period of time you can unfortunately have a fire develop very quickly like we have this afternoon on Dove Street."

Pictures taken at the scene show the gutted kitchen, smoke billowing from the block of flats and damage to the exterior of the building.
