In League with Gaddafi: Social media reaction to RTE documentary

RTE aired a brilliant documentary tonight on the incredible story of when an Irish side took on Colonel Gaddafi's Libya.

The team, made up of players from St Patrick's Athletic and Bohemians and co-managed by Brian Kerr and Billy Young, travelled to Libya for the match in 1989.

The game took place in Benghazi and somewhere between 50,000 and 80,000 people turned up to watch it, with estimates varying on the exact attendance.

Bizarrely Bohs and Pat's were both knocked out of the FAI Cup in the first round in 1989 and agreed to the match as they faced a weekend with no fixture or income otherwise. 

The locals apparently thought they were going to watch the Republic of Ireland national team which had competed at Euro 88 the previous year.

The super documentary, directed by Kevin Brannigan, has rightly received rave reviews online.
