Two brothers who delayed taking their nephew to hospital after he was shot in the head while out killing rabbits were jailed yesterday for attempting to pervert the course of justice. John Norton, 61, and Stephen Norton, 35, tried to cover up the shooting of Alfie Norton last year, Leeds crown court was told. Alfie, now 13, has been left brain damaged.
Remand inmate found hanged
An 18-year-old remand prisoner was found hanged in his cell at the weekend - bringing the number of deaths in custody this month to 16. The figure has rocketed from two last month and two the month before. In June last year there were six.
Man arrested over murder
A 58-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder of a woman who was strangled in her home, police said. June Thrussell, 56, was found dead at her house in Dagenham this month after she failed to turn up at an insurance company in Ilford, Essex, where she worked as a secretary.
Mother held after holiday
A mother who allegedly left her three young children at home to go on a two-week holiday to Turkey was arrested by police as she arrived back in the UK yesterday. Kelly Ann Piggford, 23, was held on suspicion of neglect after leaving her children in the care of friends to go on summer break.
Teachers delay academy strike
Teachers at one of the government's city academy schools have postponed their strike over fears of job losses which was planned for today. Unity City academy in Middlesbrough has been hit by severe financial problems and inspectors last month classified it as a failing school.
Freud etching auctioned
A Lucian Freud etching of a jobcentre manager - one of the artist's favourite models - fetched £26,180 at auction. Woman with an Arm Tattoo was created in 1996 and is one of two etchings Freud made of Sue Tilley.
