I'm sure Derek McInnes ends Rangers cycle I'm sick and tired of

Barry Ferguson is sick and tired of managers using Rangers as a stepping stone - and is confident the appointment of Derek McInnes will put an end to that cycle.

Danny Rohl was in the job less than a year but as soon as the call from RB Salzburg came, it was apparent he was happy to head straight to Austria. That came five years after Steven Gerrard quit for Aston Villa but soon learned the grass isn't always greener.

Ferguson is unequivocal about one thing - the club he loves should not be used as a stepping stone.

That's why he's pleased to see someone like McInnes come in - a manager who is delighted to be at Ibrox and will not be in any rush to move on.

His former teammate is already thrilled about the appointment on paper, but that factor is an added bonus.

In the Daily Record, he said: "The real positive thing about Derek is that he’ll be in no hurry to move on. He’ll view this job as the culmination of everything he’s worked for.

"He’s spent almost two decades trying to get himself back to Ibrox after his five-year spell here as a player.

"For him, this is THE dream job. As a boyhood supporter, it’s the pinnacle of his coaching ambitions.

Danny Rohl posts heartfelt farewell message after Rangers departure Rangers delay pre-season return as new timeline emerges for Derek McInnes

"I’m sick and tired of seeing other managers coming here using Ibrox as a stopping off point en route to what they might believe is a bigger club or bigger league.

"I want to make this clear. Rangers is no stepping stone. You’re not going to leave Ibrox and find yourself a bigger job.

"Derek will realise that and realise how big an opportunity he now has to write his name into the history books."

Recruitment is going to be key, with Lawrence Shankland the one signing that has been secured so far. More characters like that will do for Ferguson.

"The signing of Lawrence Shankland from Hearts is a terrific start," he added.

"Like Derek, it’s a deal that should have been done years ago but it’s better late than never and I really believe that with Lawrence leading from the front, Rangers now have the focal point to their attack that can be dangerous week in, week out.

"But the team needs more of Shank’s type of character and that’s why I’ll be watching with interest to see the signings who arrive.

"By taking both the captain and the manager from one of your main rivals, Andrew Cavenagh and Jim Gillespie will hope that they have dealt the Jambos a huge blow before a ball is kicked this season.

"It’s the kind of thing the best Rangers sides have always done down the years - strengthen yourself by weakening your opponent.

"Derek will know he won’t be able to sign the kind of superstars he played alongside during his time at the club.

"But I do think that period under Walter Smith and then Dick Advocaat has gone a long way to shaping him as a manager."
