Illinois shooting: Manhunt for gunman after officer shot dead in Rockford, police say

AP

A manhunt is underway in Illinois to capture a man who allegedly shot and killed a deputy with a US Marshall task force at an extended stay hotel.

Following the shooting, the Rockford Police Department warned residents to stay away from the area, where Rockford Police Lt Andre Brass said a shooting occurred after a team of officers arrived to serve up a warrant.

The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Floyd Brown.

Employees of nearby businesses told an ABC News affiliate in Chicago that they saw between 50 and 60 officers swarm the hotel, and a series of loud bangs.

Rockford is about 90 miles northwest of Chicago.

Representative Adam Kinzinger, who represents the congressional district that includes Rockford, said in a statement that his office is watching the situation.

"My office and I continue to monitor the active shooter situation in Rockford, as we pray for the safety of our community," Mr Kinzinger tweeted
