KANCHANABURI: Developers building and selling houses on Treasury Department land in the Ban Phu Nam Ron Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Muang district have been given 15 days to demolish them all.

Provincial governor Jeerakiat Phumsawat said on Thursday the land was in tambon Ban Kao along a motorway leading to the Ban Phu Nam Ron border checkpoint, which is currently under construction.

An inspection found structures had been built on the land and were being offered for sale by businessmen.

The department had instructed that all the illegal structures be removed within 15 days. Otherwise, they would be demolished by authorities and those responsible for them must compensate the state for the cost.

The businessmen promised to remove them by July 27.

Mr Jeerakiat ordered an inspection of the land after a public complaint about encroachment was filed with the provincial Damrongtham centre.

Muang district chief Withoon Sirinukul said the inspection also found encroachment on other land in the SEZ,  even though local treasury officials earlier issued an announcement prohibiting it.
