IKEA Is Giving Away Free Meatball Party Pies This Weekend To Celebrate 50 Years Down Under

IKEA, you’ve done it again. Just when we thought the flat-pack furniture giant couldn’t possibly surprise us (after all, they’ve already convinced us to eat meatballs in a furniture warehouse), they’ve gone and created the ultimate snack: the Meatball Party Pie.

Yes, you read that right. It’s a party pie. With meatballs. From IKEA. And it’s FREE. Life is in fact worth living.

In case you missed the memo, IKEA is celebrating 50 years in Australia. That’s half a century of LAMPAN table lamps, Billy bookcases, and famous Swedish meatballs.

To mark the occasion, they’ve mashed together two cultural icons: the humble Aussie party pie and the IKEA Swedish meatball. The result? The Meatball Party Pie, which is basically nostalgia baked in golden pastry and topped with a dollop of Swedish lingonberry jam.

And before you ask — yes, there’s a plant-based version too, made with IKEA’s plant balls. Because it’s 2025 and everyone deserves a pie. This is huge for a non-beef eating girlie!!!

The Meatball Party Pie will be available for free (yes, free) at all 10 IKEA stores across Australia on Saturday, 31 May. All you need is an IKEA Family membership, which you can sign up for online or in-store if you haven’t already. Just flash your membership and you’re in pie heaven — while stocks last, obviously.

If you’re wondering why IKEA is so obsessed with meatballs, here’s a fun fact: Aussies bought 3 million plates of IKEA meatballs last year alone. That’s a lot of meatballs.

According to Tim Prevade, IKEA Australia’s Country Food Manager, 54 per cent of Australians have eaten at IKEA at some point in their lives, and the meatballs are a big part of that.

So, the Meatball Party Pie is basically a love letter to all those years we’ve spent wandering the maze-like aisles, only to reward ourselves with a plate of meatballs at the end.

The pies themselves are the handiwork of Loftus Pies, a Sydney-based bakery that knows a thing or two about what makes a good pie.

John Tsoutsas, Loftus Pies’ “chief pie officer” (yes, that’s a real job title), says the process involved a lot of secrecy and even more taste-testing to get the meatball-to-gravy-to-pastry ratio just right.

“The Meatball pie is certainly not something we’ve done before, so we spent time with the IKEA food team perfecting the recipe for the right amount of meatball to gravy to pastry, so the textures and flavours combined in just the right way,” said Tsoutas.

“Australians are very particular about their pies, but we can’t wait for people to taste them!”

If you’re not already running to your nearest IKEA, there’s more. To celebrate the big 50, IKEA is throwing a four-day bash from Friday, 30th May to Monday, 2nd June.

Expect 50 per cent off the iconic POÄNG armchair, 50-cent hot dogs all weekend (Saturday and Sunday), and a bunch of in-store giveaways and activities for IKEA Family members.

So, whether you’re a meatball die-hard or just in it for the free pie, IKEA’s Meatball Party Pie is shaping up to be the snack of the season. It’s limited edition, it’s a little bit weird, and it’s very, very IKEA. Get in quick, because if history is anything to go by, these pies won’t last long.

For all the official info, head to the IKEA Australia website. And remember: May 31, free pies, you’re welcome.
