Ignite Sunday Wisdom on dealing with stuff you’d rather not

What a week! Scraping ice off the car, dark nights and a general election all collided into our lives with a bang. The temptation to hit the snooze button and stay firmly under the duvet was strong.

The cold, short days and political diatribe are all things that had my face resembling the emoji with its eyes rolling to the top of its head. I couldn’t face any of them and yet here they are affecting my days in a way that’s hard to avoid.

I got me thinking about all the stuff that happens in our lives which we’d rather not deal with. But that unfortunately we sort of need to. The car won’s scrap itself, the day light will keep getting shorter no matter how much I will it not to and the General Election adverts, discussions, news and campaigning isn’t going away no matter how much we try to avoid it.

So this week I wanted to ask you to contemplate the events of your life that you’ve been trying to ignore? And to face up to the fact that chances are they’re going nowhere until you deal with them.

It’s like not opening your mail or answering your phone to unknown numbers when you know you have a bill to pay. Or stopping going to places you think you’re ex might be in. Eventually the debtors will catch up to you and you’ll bump into the ex when you’re least expecting it some time.

Things like losing weight, looking for a new job or clearing out your wardrobe. You’ll do it tomorrow, or next week or wait until the start of a new month. And then without noticing the scales edge up, the job gets more soul destroying and the chaos of your wardrobe means you don’t even open it anymore and start hanging your clothes everywhere else around your house.

Simply put, some stuff just can’t be avoided. No matter how much we try. If we want it to go away chances are we need to look it dead in the eye, do what needs to be done and then put it firmly behind us.

When it comes to the General Election we could try to avoid it. We could even decide not to vote, but would that make it go away? It would mean we’re burying our heads in the sand, avoiding what’s being said and missing out on our opportunity to have a say.

And on the other side of it we could be annoyed with the outcome and regret not making our voice heard and contributing to the final result.

This week as well as dealing with the winter and election campaigning I urge us all to look at the stuff in our lives we’re avoiding. Like I read once, you can try to avoid reality, but you can’t avoid the consequences of reality.

We have the freedom to deal with our ‘stuff’ just now or we can wait until later – because it’s not going away. It will need your attention at some point. By deciding to look it in the eye just maybe you’ll take away its power.
