According to Nolan, even if you can’t help someone you know get a job, you can help motivate them and give them hope by simply connecting with them and giving them some of your time.

“We need to do more. It is time we looked at such connections with a sense of pride; these are people who are reaching out to you because they admire you, trust you, and need your help. We can do better to help them, because we may one day be in the same position and need that helping hand from someone else.”

Something else to keep in mind is that after you’ve finally gotten your new position, you can help your network by sharing online how it is that you landed your role. Gatekeeping that info doesn’t help anyone. Meanwhile, your advice can give someone you know a much-needed boost when they need it the most.

You are, essentially, helping people who are likely to help you when you’re in need in the future. Being empathetic and supportive makes sense, even from a purely utilitarian perspective (even disregarding the fact that it is the kind and ethical thing to do).

In the meantime, psychologist Barbara Markway, Ph.D., who has written ‘The Self-Confidence Workbook: A Guide to Overcoming Self-Doubt and Improving Self-Esteem,’ stresses that you can reframe the gaps in your resume and lack of work experience to your advantage.

For example, during economically chaotic periods of time, you are competing against people of similar age with little to no work experience. You could leverage your good academic performance to set yourself apart.

For instance, if a recruiter asks you about your lack of experience, you could tell them something like: “I was fortunate that I was able to devote my full efforts to my studies. If I get the job, I would focus on my work just as I did on my studies. My academic record shows that I am very capable.”

If you feel particularly anxious about going to job interviews, you can always practice to make up for your weaknesses. You could do mock interviews with people you trust, like family, friends, classmates, etc.

“Many people with anxiety avoid practicing, because it raises their anxiety level. But this is a mistake. In the end, you’ll come across as more confident and less anxious if you’ve practiced,” Markway writes.

I had a virtual job interview scheduled today for a big bank. I waited the whole 30 minutes, and the person never showed up to start the meeting. I emailed the recruiter after ~10 minutes, asking if the interview was still happening. Then 1.5 hours after the scheduled interview, I got the following email. So unprofessional!

I've been in the industry over 10 years and have lowered my standards to apply for just about everything including junior positions only to find a local company looking for a junior analyst that pays like a junior role but requires a masters degree. What are these people smoking these days?

#57 It’s Finally Over

I’ve finally found a job after over 500+ applications. I have been unemployed since July of 2024. I found a good part time but the pay was bad and I had shitty hours. Just enough to pay for gas to get there basically. I don’t even personally count that. Once I quit that in July of 2025, I thought I’d have no problem finding another job. BOY was I wrong. Life lesson learned.

Best advice I can give is keep applying. Showing up in person often gets you shoo’ed away. So instead save yourself the gas and money and just call. Call everywhere you applied to 1-2 times a week and ask if they’ve gotten anything or ask to schedule a meeting to talk. unfortunately was ghosted like 90% of the time and even had a few “sorry but…”. Don’t give up. Keep trying.

Here’s my stats I guess.
500+ apps
Just under 100 thanks for applying but.
The rest of the 300 or more were absolutely zero response.
3 interviews in the year of 2025. (Fucking traumatic).
1 interview in 2026 and I got the job.

Honestly I’ll be praying for all of whom need it. For the help and support I’ve been given. Thank you guys so much you helped me in not giving up as well as knowing my options. Stay strong we’ll all get through this!
