ESL has confirmed IEM Beijing as the final event on its 2026 Counter-Strike calendar, marking the long-awaited return of the Intel Extreme Masters brand to China’s capital after a seven-year absence. The event runs Nov. 2 to 8 and will welcome fans inside the venue across both the group stage and the playoffs, mirroring the format ESL successfully used at IEM Chengdu last year.
A long-awaited return for IEM Beijing
China’s history with IEM has been largely written in Chengdu and Shanghai, making the 2019 visit to Beijing something of a fresh frontier for the brand. That event delivered fireworks as Astralis squared off against Asia-Oceania’s finest in 100 Thieves, and IGL Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander walked away with the MVP medal.
Then the pandemic hit, and ESL’s China chapter was put on hold. The second IEM Beijing-Haidian ended up as a largely forgettable online event in 2020, despite another brilliant Grand Final showdown between Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut and Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev.
Sixteen of the world’s top teams will be invited via VRS to compete for a share of the $1,250,000 prize pool. Adding to the spectacle, matches will be played on a 360-degree stage—a setup ESL has only used at IEM Rio in recent memory. The event will be held at the Bloomage Biotech·Biohyalux ECM Arena, with a peak capacity of around 18,000 seats.
A final hurrah for ESL’s 6-team playoffs format
The group stage kicks off Nov. 2, splitting the 16 teams into two eight-team double-elimination brackets. All matches will be played as best-of-three, rewarding consistent teamplay over single-map heroics. The top three finishers from each group advance, sending six teams through to the playoffs.
Notably, IEM Beijing will be the last time ESL runs a six-team playoffs bracket in CS2. The organizer has already announced its intention to join PGL in running eight-team playoff brackets, eliminating the direct-to-semifinal qualification system from the group stage. For now, the top two seeds will await their opponents in the semifinals before setting up a best-of-five clash in the Grand Final.
Fans attending in person won’t have to wait until the playoffs to get inside the arena. Group stage matches will be ticketed on a per-day basis, meaning the atmosphere will be live from day one as the bracket takes shape. Tickets, signing sessions, and other details will be revealed by ESL closer to the event.
