One of Liverpool’s major art galleries is hoping to undergo major repairs as significant refurbishment of its interior also takes place.
The Walker Art Gallery, situated at the heart of Liverpool's cultural quarter on William Brown Street, has submitted planning applications to carry out a range of works on the exterior of the Grade II listed building. According to the application, the repairs will look to carry out “alterations and repairs” to the roof, windows, roof lights, edge protections and stone work, as well as the removal of some ventilation chutes.
National Museums Liverpool (NML), which operates the building and the World Museum on the same street, has applied to Liverpool City Council to carry out the works. A spokesperson for NML told the ECHO that as well as updating repair works carried out a number of years ago, the latest updates should help combat “natural weather erosion” on the exterior of the building.

The works are also hoping to improve drainage capabilities of the 19th century building. The plans would also see repairs to the stonework on the facade of the building.
The recent applications are part of wider refurbishment plans that are being funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). One aspect of this is ‘Renaissance Rediscovered’, a £710,000 refurbishment which will transform around 600 square metres of gallery space.
This will see the current Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque rooms undergo major refurbishment and will be the first time the spaces have been redeveloped in more than three decades. The four gallery spaces are currently closed after works started in June, with expectation for the project to be completed in 2023.
The 'Renaissance Rediscovered' project is being funded by the DCMS, Tavolozza Foundation, Henry Moore Foundation and Art Friends Merseyside. The refurbishment and the infrastructural work being carried out across the Walker Art Gallery is set to cost around £4.5m.
