Iconic Greek singer Marinella dies aged 87

Famous Greek singer Marinella has passed away at the age of 87, her family announced in a statement.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Marinella, our beloved mother and grandmother, who passed away at her home today, 28 March 2026 at 6 pm," the statement read.

She had suffered a stroke while performing at Athens' ancient Odeon theatre in September 2024, that left her hospitalised for four months and from which she never recovered.

Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in 1938 in Thessaloniki, she rose to become one the most celebrated artists in Greek popular folk music.

Marinella released 66 solo albums in a career that began in 1956, and included collaborations with Greece's most notable composers, such as Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarhakos and Manos Hadjidakis.

She represented Greece in its first ever entry into the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974.
