Iconic city centre kebab shop Iskander's to close after almost 30 years

Popular city centre kebab shop Iskander's is to close it's doors next week after almost 30 years in operation.

The beloved Dame Street eatery was one of the first places in the city to serve kebabs when it opened in 1992.

But the popular late-night restaurant will serve its last customer on Sunday, January 19 before it closes its doors for good.

The business was recently bought by the Aydin family, who are planning a major refurbishment.

Ali Aydin said: "Having been open since 1992 and been Ireland's first major kebab shop, it [Iskander's] will be missed.

"Being open till half five in the mornings, it started a trend of eating a kebab after a night out on the town with many kebab shops following in its footsteps.

"It paved the way for the term 'shawarma' and 'doner kebab' being widely known in the Dubin region."

The new restaurant is expected to open under a new name in mid-February.
