Iceland unveil game-changing new party food - including prawns wrapped in bacon

Yes the massive roast on the big day is tasty, but can we take a moment to talk about the beautiful and hugely underrated invention that is festive party food?

After all that traditional turkey and trimmings, there's no better food to pick at for the next few hours than endless exciting canapés, with Asian-inspired dishes taking centre stage in Iceland's 2019 party food range.

But as well as hoisin duck toast, chicken noodle sticks and prawns wrapped in bacon, there's also a big focus on vegan offerings this year, with Iceland launching a revolutionary new range of plant based foods for the festive season - including lots of intriguing party foods and nibbles.

The brand's famous 'No Bull' burgers make an appearance in slider form, as well as duck spring rolls that don't contain any actual duck.

So whether you're hosting a big Christmas Eve party or just serving up some easy canapés for your friends and family, Iceland supermarket has gone all out with their 2019 Christmas party food range, and we've picked out our favourite vegan and non-vegan offerings below.

Hoisin Duck Toast

Classic prawn toast just got a festive make-over courtesy of Iceland’s chefs, with the shellfish replaced by shredded hoisin duck, and topped with the obligatory sesame seeds.

If you like duck pancakes... this one's for you.

Luxury Jumbo Red Shrimp wrapped in bacon

Who knew prawns could get even better, with the plump sweetness of the red shrimp pairing perfectly with a thin rasher of unsmoked bacon for the ultimate Christmas treat.

10 Chicken Noodle Sticks

Finally, someone has found a way to eat noodles with just one hand, without spilling them all over your top and the floor. And with each noodle ball boasting a slightly crispy coating, they could even be better than your usual chow mein...

Also pictured are the supermarket's new prawn lollipops, featuring balls of prawns, coconut and coriander in a bubbly batter.

Tempura Vegetable Selection

Vegan food doesn't always have to mimic meat. Sometimes, naturally vegan food can be just as tasty as anything involving animals.

Here, famously light tempura batter coats courgette, baby corn, green beans and pumpkin pieces - a finger food that could also be a great way to sneak extra veg into little one's diets.

No Bull Sliders

Iceland's 'No Bull' burgers already have a bit of a cult following, so the supermarket has now created a bite-sized version of them for Christmas.

When we tried them out for ourselves, we actually preferred the miniature vegan cheeseburgers to the standard 'No Bull' patties, as the sauce and cheese added a lot of extra flavour to the plant-based burger.

So it's hardly surprising that they were voted best vegan canapé in this year’s BBC Good Food Christmas Taste Awards.

No Duck Spring Rolls

With Asian duck dishes often verging on the sweet side, they're perfect for transforming into vegan versions, with sweet jackfruit hard to distinguish from standard shredded duck in this spring roll.

Apart from using the sweet fruit instead of meat, the rest of the classic party food snack remains the same, with some added vegetables, Chinese spices and hoisin sauce.

No Duck Chinese Collection

And it doesn't stop there, as alongside the spring rolls there's also a second vegan Chinese offering launching at Iceland.

A stunning selection of vegan sweet plum gyozas, hoisin pastry cones and Szechuan filo crackers, you could probably serve this up as you would any other platter selection without even telling people it's vegan...

Halloumi fries

Okay so it might not be Christmassy, but we still just can't get enough of the beautifully salty cheese.

As well as the delicious sticks of the stuff, it also comes with some chilli sauce to drizzle on top.
