ICC announce new regulations including coronavirus substitutes and saliva ban

Substitutes will be permitted for players showing symptoms of coronavirus during a Test match after temporary rules were ratified by the ICC.

The swap over of players will take place in the same way as concussion subs are employed with a like-for-like replacement being permitted by the match referee but with the unwell player being put in isolation.

Other temporary changes include the removal of neutral umpires in order to reduce the need for extra travel and an extension of DRS reviews from two to three per innings as a result.

Players must not use saliva to shine the ball and will be reminded by umpires if they inadvertently do so. If it continues then an official warning will take place and two warnings will lead to a five run penalty.

England’s Test series with the West Indies next month will be the first to use the new regulations, with players also wearing sponsor’s logos on their chests for the first time in Test cricket.

Pakistan are due to be in England in August and they have named their coaching staff for the tour, with legendary batsman Younis Khan working under head coach and former team-mate Misbah Ul-Haq.

One time England spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed will work alongside former Surrey pace hero Waqar Younis.
