I missed the IBD live team yesterday. | We missed everyone! |
Justin please share the "root cause" of the issue. | Right now, we only know the vendor has implemented the necessary changesto prevent it from recurring. The issue was on Zoom's side. |

Hi Ali, do you know if teh daily email promoting the show will continue as in past? | Yes, it goes out every day. If you're not getting it, please contact our customer success team! |
Funny that I come up as Mark's iPhone now when I used to come up as MARK SEDRAN in the chat | I think you can change your name. But good to know. |
Yep, I couldn't get connected yesterday and I even tried via my phone, a PC, WiFi, and even 5G. Nothing would work so I took a vacation from IBD Live, lol. | We're sorry. Vendor Zoom identified the root cause of the issue and has implemented the necessary changes to prevent it from recurring. Thanks for your patience. |
I was one of those who had the sign-in issue, but I was able to curcumvent the problem by clicking on the link on the Zoom page that says "If you don't see a dialog, click the 'Launch Meeting' below." That one worked. | Good to know! |
Ed, GM please zoom a bit if possible, thanks | Asked Justin to Zoom in. |
Hi guys: is it correct that O'Neill recommended to only buy on up days? Care to elaborate why? Also, Up on the indexes and the particular stock to buy or the index can be up and the name a bit low? TXS! | First question: incorrect. I am certain Bill would buy stocks on down days. Especially stocks bucking market. There is a story in his book about how he saw a stock that was up on a bad day (Control Data I think?) and he recognized that strength and immediately bought the stock |
Good Morning IBD Live. It is my understanding that IBD considers a stock extended at 7%-8% above the 50 SMA. I have noticed that IBD has been highlighting stocks that are double digit % above the 50 SMA. For example, $AVGO and $GEV were highlighted on yesterday's SMT. Has IBD changed its thinking on extension above the 50 SMA? Maybe different metrics since we are in a power trend? Thanks |
Some folks look at extension vs. 50-day for buying while others do not. It depends on each trader's style and risk tolerance. Risk management is the common denominator. |
David Ryan - last Tuesday you were 50% long - where are you this morning? Favorite set-ups please. Thanks | live answered |
FYI outage - I tried clicking "chat with an Expert" on Live homepage & when I chose 'connect with Agent', things seemed to freeze up. Should be investigated for any issues there. | Very strange. I just tested the chat with an expert functionality on my end. It is functioning normally and not freezing up. Did you try clearing your cache and restarting your browser? Keep me posted if it happens to you again. Thanks for the info and apologies for yesterday's issues! |
thoughts on CoreWeave would be great, thank you!!! | We discussed yesterday. Very extended! Waiting for a new setup. |
We have to look at OLLI breaking out with David in the house? It is a tradition!!! | live answered |
After dealing with Zoom yesterday for an hour its no wonder the stock is down 500 points from its high | Lol! Crazy how much we rely on this platform |
Such bias by ed! | Q1 China EV sales generally are terrible for New Year holidays, etc. So Q2 should be a LOT higher than Q1. |
In the future how can we know when the problem is not on my end. I tried over and over to get in, but in vain. But I received no communication from IBD. Did I miss a communication? Thanks | I totally understand where you're coming from and would be saying the same as a customer. We've been doing this show nearly six years and this was a very, very RARE issue. With that being said, we now have a process in place to improve communication around issues if this were to happen again. Vendor Zoom identified the root cause and has implemented the necessary changes to prevent it from recurring. Thanks for your understanding and patience. |
I've said this before, but yesterday really drove this home. In the show Billions, there is an on staff psychologist for the traders to put them in the best head space for the trading situation. With the Moody's downgrade yesterday was a day where I was glad I was able to get on IBD Live after a few attempts because your steadying influence was appreciated. Glad you don't charge Psychologist rates for this premium service. 😊 |
Yes, great to hear so many different perspectives from the team! |
What happened to IBD Live yesterday? I was unable to watch and not able to acess website. | We discussed earlier. Zoom had issues. |
Good morning all - I missed the show yesterday despite all of the various attempts with tech support to get connected. Would it be possible to post yesterday's recommendations? thank you. | Hi Carolyn, Vendor Zoom identified the root cause of the issue and has implemented the necessary changes to prevent it from recurring. Thanks for your patience. We posted the recording of yesterday's show (can watch it back at 2x speed) and the summary description includes the list of tickers we discussed. We are not making trade recommendations, the tickers discussed are for educational purposes. Thanks again for your understanding! |
In this time of uncertainty have there been a precedent for a rally like this power trend we are in currently in | 2020 V-shaped recovery was filled with uncertainty. Team has also talked about 1998 precedent many times |
BROS dropping 4% today. Any news? | I don't see any news. |
Any news on BROS this morning? down 3% | Don't see any news. |
Ali, thanks for the response, always appreciate your insight, unfortunately I was not able to join yesterday and started listening to the replay but didn't finish. Victm of Zoom issue | I'm so sorry. We're very frustrated with Zoom. I'm glad they fixed the issue but I would've preferred a MUCH faster resolution! |
power trend? | Yes, we are in a power trend |
Why was the IBD website down? | Vendor Zoom identified the root cause of the issue and has implemented the necessary changes to prevent it from recurring. Thanks for your understanding and patience. |
Hi Ali - how does SFM look to you? Do you shop at their stores? We don't have them in Canada. Thx | I should've bought it last year and missed out! I don't like the reaction to earnings in February. I'm focused on stocks I have crazy high conviction in and this one isn't quite on that level for me. I know Ed and Rachel shop there and they like it. |
Please discuss when to buy stocks off the 200 day MA. I Was surprised that David Chung said it is OK to buy long term leaders off the 200 day (Like FICO) and yesterday I learned that Scott was buying ALAB off the 200 day MA. I am surprised. It seems like the CANSLIM rules keep changing! |
Traditional/orthodox IBD rules have not changed a whole lot over the years, but that does not mean team members will create their own entries/buy rules. |
MUSK CNBC 2pm ET interview | Thanks! |
ED, do you know if the TESLA robo-taxi will be available for sale to the general public | I do not know that. Musk says that. But he always says that. The data don't support that happening anytime soon. But that's clearly what's driving TSLA. |
Yesterday's outage: I cleared intenet history, cleared caches, restarted browser, then restarted my computer, tried a different browser, and finally, I reset my wifi and reinstalled Zoom. Eventually connected with an agent who told me it was a problem on your side. |
Our engineers investigated internally and escalated with Zoom's engineers, and it was actually on Zoom's side. They identified the root cause of the isue and implemented the necessary changes to prevent it from recurring. I'm so sorry you had to do all of that yesterday to no avail. We were very frustrated with Zoom as well! |
Ali is on fire with the responsponses. Not even one gets by her!!! | Trying! Still almost 100 unanswered submissions in the background! |
Could customer service please resend out the Q&A email from yesterday's show; could not log in and received no IBD Live emails yesterday (or today), but could log in today. Thanks in advance. | I'm so sorry, that's quite frustrating. The contents of the email is available in the description next to yesterday's archived episode at investors.com/IBDLive. Please let our customer success team know if you don't receive today's email by end of day. |
Thx Ali - I think you have high conviction in Dash and SPOT? Others you like? | Right now I'm in PLTR, NFLX, UBER and SPOT for individual stocks. I also have TQQQ, QLD, SSO and IBIT. |
but now one contacted us, the customers | totally understand where you're coming from and would be saying the same as a customer. |
Ali Coram 03:44 PM Traditional/orthodox IBD rules have not changed a whole lot over the years, but that does not mean team members will create their own entries/buy rules. That's the key. Every investor is an indvidualist. What works for you is fine. But the basic rules of CAN SLIM are still working. |
I agree, the IBD methodology is a great foundation and each trader can tweak/supplement with what works best for them. Risk management is always the common denominator, but other than that a lot of gray that's open to interpretation! |
Ali, all of the questions from the IBDLive family concerning ZOOM issues speaks volumes on the GREAT work you folks do every morning. Thanks from Beaumont, Texas... | It was very frustrating that Zoom had such a severe issue yesterday. We're glad they resolved it. We all rely on the platform and this show! |
Good Morning IBD team! Thank you for taking care of the Zoom issue... | Thanks so much for your patience. We were just as frustrated as everyone else! |
I was not able to access Zoom yesterday but I'm thankful that IBDLive posts the show on the website within the hour. the website is a great back-up in a time of network outages. | Thanks so much for your patience. We were just as frustrated as everyone else. We prioritized getting the recording up on the site as fast as we could, so I'm glad you were able to watch the recording |
Can you look at AS it came out strong is it too late for an entry? | David already analyzed it. I should have bought some calls. For now, wait for another entry. |
My take on the attraction to high flyers Justin is that people's fear is gone just at the moment when they should be a bit more circumspect | Makes sense! |
thanks for the update on the yesterday event Ali... | Absolutely. Very frustrating for everyone, glad it's been resolved. |
QBTS Cup and Handle ??? | Want some sort of pattern to trade off of, Scott was in it and took his profits! He's out |
Hi again - can we get an update on status of power trend pls? | Power trend is on and will stay on until the 21-day crosses below the 50-day. But that doesn't mean traders shouldn't take action using other signals before that happens because that would take a while to trigger |
PLTR looks weak. Is it warning sign for growth? | PLTR is pausing around a buy point after a big run - on a day when the market is falling slightly. That's letting moving averages catch up a bit. |
Thank you SO MUCH for the MarketSurge webinar with Bill on AMGN-I've watched it 5 times-VERY informative and helpful. | Great! |
AS - nice move on earnings | Some short covering in Amer Sports today w/ about 10.5% of the float held short headed into report. Solid numbers. |
Please have a look at RL | Looking good, running up to right side of base with earnings due Thu. |
AGX | live answered |
UBER? | Regret not adding to it on May 12! |
Hi All, Could you cover DAVE, how long would you want to see it consoldiate for? | Strong one! The weekly chart has the look of a short stroke although it just broke out. https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/smart-chart-reading-why-short-stroke-3-weeks-tight-give-a-profit-opportunity/ |
SMH | live answered |
Hood seems like a handle to me would you have considered getting in even though the handle is too deep? | HOOD did have a handle within a DEEP double-bottom base. Now it's moving past a lil' pause. FYI - I have a HOOD position. |
I get a daily email reminding me of the upcoming Live show. If there are issues in the future maybe you could 1) send an email letting people know so they don't spend time trying to solve the problem on their end or calling tech support. 2) It would also be helpful to post a banner on the IBD Live homepage stating you are aware and working on the issue. |
We did send out an email during the IBD Live show. We did post a banner across investors.com -- though late in the show. |
Can you please check RBRK? | Looks great and up on a down day. I'm waiting for a pullback or a tight area. |
Please review BROS, a leaderboard stock, is has dropped 5.7%. thanks. | We looked at earlier. |
AVGO earnings coming in two weeks . what is thae ATR for this stock. chip sector already moved a lot any more strent left? | ATR is 3.9%, which definitely acceptable. Building a handle. |
Ed - your thoughts on TW please - thanks | Setting up again - but ugly selling to start the base and a high-volume drop to start the handle. Reduced market volatility might hurt TW, other exchange/market-y stocks. |
With RBC, if you look at past breakouts, they hardly last very long before giving it back, but… if you look at how it behaves at the 200-day, it touches there frequently and gets VERY consistent support there. I think that's why David is right to buy it at support. |
Definitely a stair stepper. |
PGR has been a slow and steady one and I sell option verticals around the price to have it be an almost Chris G. type of stock... lol.. just kidding Chris. | Yawn... |
David - my insurance in Dallas is also with Travelers. 50% increase in 2024. 30% increase this year. Increased my deductible 3X to bring the premium down. | That's what I did a couple years ago. My insurance barely went up this year. Also I've only had one claim in 34 years, so the higher deductible makes a lot of sense. |
Good morning! What's going on with XYF? | I guess earnings. I'm not familiar with this Chinese financial play but nice fundamentals. |
BYD cannot be stopped | Lots of growth drivers. |
David had position in DOCU is he still holding increased reduced | Still in but cut back a little. |
Chris or David put 2 screens for chemical stocks. how to find those screener in marketsurge | If you search for IED33 you should find my two screens for Cyclicals. |
How do the panelists use the 20% sell rule (generally). Mr. Vandenbord talked about it the other day. Interested in the comparison/differences. | In a strong market like this, I'm willing to give my 20% movers a bit more room. But I do like the rule a lot because Bill O'Neil had a ton of research that showed stocks generally starting to consolidate and build new bases after a gain of 20% to 25% from the buy point. |
Can ED or David comment on WLDN? Thnx | Acting well. Extended from 43.34 buy point but 50 is a buy point from a larger consolidation. Might trade a little thin. |
Is AXON actionable here? | Technically, the buy was on May 8. Even though it's still in the 5% buy zone from conventional entry of 715.99, seems a little stretched to me. In some cases like this, I've started with a very small position (i.e. 2.5%) |
Any thoughts on CRDO? | another solid name for the Watchlist. Just waiting for a pause. Huge move in recent weeks (with one-day consolidations along the way) |
HOOD looking very good today. | Though its would form a handle for at least 5 days, but too strong! |
Whats that earings line on Rivian is it possible its just starting in the right direction | The losses are getting lower |
What's your favorite EV? BYD? TSLA? | TSLA isn't an EV stock. And Tesla's EV business looks really grim. BYD and XIACY are the best-looking EV stocks IMO. |
David, speaking of insurance stocks PLMR just keeps going up. Btw, I had the same issue with Liberty Mutual here in Boston. They raised my home insurance rates about 20%. | I have PLMR for earthquake insurance. I have to find a way into the stock. |
RIVN Those "headlights" are quite interesting . . . . | yes, can always tell when one is behind you Peter! |
David, did it incl. AMZN in RIVN survey? | no since you can't buy a AMZN car as far as I know. |
Would you buy Tesla at the current pricing? | Looks pretty extended now after 8 gains in 10 trading sessions. |
Thoughts on SE | SE is a strong stock holding gains after breakout. Would love to see it test 10-day line since it would be a more palatable entry. |
look at hsai with it's LIDAR | Oh, that's right. HSAI breaking out today. |
To ED: Do I remember correctly that you can maximum "stomach" a 15% gap above the 50MA? Thank you | That's a maximum .... with the exception if a stock forges a solid handle. |
Recently went home to Australia and BYDs were everywhere - they look awesome | Australia is a VERY interesting market to watch. A rich nation with no "domestic" automaker. So it's sort of a neutral playing field. |
XIACY has EVs that look a bit like a Porsches. They are beating out the Tesla Model Y in terms of technology. Incredible looking car. Apparently an executive at Ford has the XIACY version of the Model Y and loves it. | Going to be a big hit. |
I heard BYD was in Italy 2 years ago. . My relatives still buy Italian cars. | Well, BYD making a much bigger push now. Export capacity a LOT higher than six months ago. Hungary plant (and then Turkey plant) will let BYD avoid big EU tariffs. |
Hi guys :) any comment on CLS? thanks | I own it and like the tight trading after bullish move above 100 level. Showing strength and support like a lot of other stocks currently. |
how about ODD? | live answered |
KEN, my Cubbies are hanging tough so far . . . . | Pete Crowe Armstrong fun to watch. SoCal kid from baseball powerhouse Harvard Westlake. |
RIVN comment. Amazon a major investor and customer of delivery vans | True. |
Thank you Ed, yes, BYD cars look really good too. I wonder how they would do with US safety testing ?? | Well, BYD doesn't seem to have a problem with European safety standards. |
EAT - Anyone looking at this base? Thank you... | It'll need to move above its recent high of 165.34 to fully break out of its downtrend. |
Doesn't BYD have a truck plant or bus plant in the U.S? | Outskirts of broader LA metro - bus plant in Lancaster. There's no doubt that if Trump allowed China EV makers to set up in the U.S. (something he brought up during the 2024 campaign) that BYD would jump at the chance. |
What about RYAN AIR (RYAAY) Dave? | Broke out on earnings yesterday, looks strong |
SAP, out of the buyzone but looks like a handle above 21ema at 300 price level | Does look like a high handle. |
Why is it that BYDDF doesn't have a composite rating listed? | BYD isn't listed in the U.S. - it's over the counter. OTC stocks - XIACY too - don't have a Composite Rating. But, BYDDF clearly would have a very high CR given its 97 RS rating and 99 RS rating. |
PLTR, add to at this point? | We're holding a 1/2 position on Leaderboard and haven't raised it yet as volume has dried up in the stock. |
Ali, any tips for changing my name back? It's weird, when I look around, my Zoom account knows me as Larry. Why so formal? 🤷♂️ | We can change our names. Does it not let you change yours? |
Thanks Chris for IED33 | Glad it worked for you. |
Thank you Kenneth... | Ken is fine! |
ALAB setting up another day or so | Looks a little like CLS |
FTNT ? | Cup with handle buy point of 109.33 def in play. |
We keep seeing patterns like PWR. How did we miss that on the way up? | People who bought the earnings gap made the right decision in hindsight. PWR could be adding a handle now to its pattern, although not much of a pullback at this point. |
David Ryan: I listened to your explanation of how you go through the IBD 250 for the 50 minute drive home from church to find actionable stocks. | Yes my wife drives while I go through the list. You can get through a lot of stocks quickly on the Ipad. |
SBSW: up +10.7% this morning, the only precious metals stock in a blue buy zone, and a major platinum group miner. Quite the outlier. Please take a look. | Looks good. |
Chris I am new. In Market surge->screens->browse screens. I put keyword IED33. only one screener from 3/2/25 is there from this year. Am i at right place. thanks | I'll talk to Scott. |
David: Today you mentioned when you were younger you searched a lot for small caps. What list would you search to find small cap actionable stocks? | They would show up on the general list if you screen and sort by EPS and RS. |
David, Jamie Dimon also talked about how they had increased their cash position to cover bad loans. "In a sign it's preparing for such a deterioration, JPMorgan in April said it had added $973 million to the pile of money it sets aside to cover soured loans, dwarfing the $290 million analysts expected." - thinkadvisor.com |
good to know |
