‘Dollar Tree of hotels’: Woman visits Las Vegas and stays at the Luxor. Then she gets ‘so, so scared’ by what she sees

A woman visiting Las Vegas noticed that the Luxor didn’t match her expectations because of its dark hallways and old furnishings. That’s because the room was so dark that it scared her, forcing her to keep her lights on at night.

In a video with over 18,000 views, Micayla (@micaylamalchiodii), a Tampa, Florida resident, blogged her recent experience at the hotel in 2025. She described multiple things about the hotel that made her uncomfortable, from the furnishings to a general dilapidated atmosphere there. But the biggest issue was how dark every single room was.

Luxor Hotel: A Scary Stay

“I’m blogging my experience because I’m so afraid, I’m so [expletive] afraid of this hotel,” Micayla said. “Like why are the rooms in the hallways so dark? There’s honestly no [expletive] way in hell I’m going to sleep tonight. There’s no way. Like what in the back rooms is this [expletive]?”

Micayla described the Luxor as being so dark that she was scared during daylight hours.

“It’s the way I left, like all of my lights on and I… during the day I was honestly afraid to be in my room,” she said. “And now I’m just back here and I’m still afraid… I am honestly [expletive] terrified.”

She also described frigid temperatures, which she couldn’t adjust to whatsoever. This combination of factors made her feel generally unwelcome in the space, adding to her negative experience.

“It’s also cold as [expletive] in here too,” she said. “Like why do we have the AC blaring and it’s like 50 degrees outside? I was honestly excited for this trip and I am honestly not excited anymore because I’m staying in the Luxor. Please pray for me,” she complained.

Micayla clarified later in her video that she planned to sleep with her lights on even though she generally doesn’t at home. Being alone in the hotel room only intensified her worries, which ended up ruining her hotel stay in some ways.

The Luxor hotel—a good or bad place to stay in Las Vegas?

The Luxor is one of the most notable hotels in Las Vegas. The giant pyramid-shaped structure captivated thousands when it opened in 1993, but has it held up to its iconic reputation?

The simple answer is no. The Luxor resort has been described as one of the “most hated” spots on the strip. According to Islands, the hotel earned itself a 2.5 rating on Yelp and a 1.5 rating on TripAdvisor in 2025. That article even described “dimly-lit” rooms such as the one Micayla stayed in.

The Luxor is one of seven hotels described by feelvegas.com as a place to avoid. Beware, the blog states, because the hotel has “some issues on the inside.” Like many Vegas hotels, the spot’s known for its poor air quality due to smoking. It’s also quite a distance from some of the strip’s bigger amenities, making it a hard pick for families and those interested in tourist spots.

“Walmart of the strip,” said one TikTok commenter on Micayla’s video. Another added, “Luxor is a crappy hotel. It’s so run down and the bugs were nasty last time I stayed there. Probably 10 years ago. Never again.”

Luxor supporters chime in

However, some people argue it’s better than most people claim it to be. One Reddit user described the location as a “budget Delano” when staying in the tower suites. Others said that it gets a bad reputation but is a perfectly fine place to stay, especially in comparison to other spots.

Many people warned those trying to stay in the Luxor that they should only look for a room in the Tower Suites. Micayla even mentioned trying to get a hotel room there instead of staying in the darker parts of the building, something to keep in mind for a future stay.
